If you are a parent who would like to have your child participate in a club, there are many active 4-H Shooting sports clubs in NJ. Please visit the county links to the left for locations, main contact person and meeting times of clubs. You can also contact your local Cooperative Extension office to see if new clubs are forming. 4-H Shooting Sports programs for children are also offered at Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp during the summer camping program.
If you are only interested in competition or individual lessons for you or your child, then 4-H shooting sports may not be for you.
We utilize shooting sports as a vehicle for youth development, and a key component of that is working together in groups. We do have a few opportunities for inter-club matches, and offer an invitational gathering for all clubs in the spring, but we do not focus on creating competitive shooters.
If you are interested in forming a shooting sports club, you will need to first approach your Rutgers Cooperative Extension agent of the county you live in to see you can start a club. Once you get approval and complete the volunteer process, we can get the ball rolling to get your club going. The training to run a shooting sports program is offered in the early fall and on the last weekend of April, and you can get certified in Archery, Air Rifle, or one of the other curricula. For details about the 15-hour training, please visit the instructor training page. Once certified, you can instruct youth. The State program also can loan a limited amount of archery or air rifle equipment for short periods of time to get your club off the ground
