A 4-H Short-Term Exploratory Program (STEP Club) brings youth and adults with similar interests together for a unique learning experience. A STEP Club can be started with as few as two adult volunteers and five youth with an interest in a particular topic. The adults provide expertise and guidance and are supported by 4-H staff and Rutgers Youth Protection. Volunteers have access to curriculum and the resources of Rutgers University and the Cooperative Extension System.
By participating in 4-H STEP Clubs, youth have the opportunity to explore special interests in a "learn-by-doing" environment. This allows them to actively master knowledge and skills and see themselves as participants in directing their futures. STEP can meet a specific number of times over a few months. Youth in STEP are involved in a minimum of 12 hours of learning, giving them a chance to learn multiple skills and concepts about the topic of special interest. Sessions involve one or more hands-on learning activities, and provide an opportunity for youth to present their work to a group.
