New Jersey 4-H Members Attend National Photography Youth Summit

Three New Jersey 4‑H members attended the National Photography Youth Summit held February 26–March 1 at the National 4‑H Youth Conference Center located in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Nearly 50 youth from across the nation had an opportunity to learn and develop skills as they interacted with experts in the field of photography.

During the summit, participants attended workshops; engaged in hands-on activities; listened to guest speakers; participated in photography experiences in the DC area; and interacted with professional photographers who helped them to gain knowledge and skills in photography techniques as well as learn about career opportunities. Workshops included photography basics, camera exposure modes and settings, lighting, color, portraits, composition, and many more. Participants gained knowledge and skills; learned about the field of photography including advancements in technology, emerging photo-techniques, and the role of social media and responsible posting; and develop an awareness of career opportunities in photography.

The New Jersey delegates attending the summit were Sierra Durham of Lake Hopatcong, Karsten Englander of Morristown and Benjamin Fernandez of Bridgewater.

"The National Photography Youth Summit provided an excellent opportunity for youth to learn and practice valuable knowledge and skills as well explore careers related to photography," says Jeannette Rea Keywood, State 4‑H Agent, Department of 4‑H Youth Development.

The 4‑H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension. 4‑H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K–13 (one year out of high school), on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait, marital status, domestic partnership status, military service, veteran status and any other category protected by law.
