New Jersey 4-H Dairy Cattle Show Set for August 13

4‑H members from across New Jersey are preparing for the State 4‑H Dairy Cattle Show scheduled for August 13 at the Salem County Fairgrounds in Pilesgrove. Twenty-three (23) 4‑H dairy cattle club members representing four counties (Hunterdon, Salem, Somerset, and Sussex) will be competing in breed and showmanship classes. There will be 80 dairy cattle including Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey and Brown Swiss on display during the show.

Youth in the 4‑H dairy cattle project learn how to care for and show dairy cattle throughout the year. At the end of the 4‑H year, these individuals come together to compete in type and showmanship classes. Youth may exhibit animals of the six Dairy Breeds that they own or lease.

"The State 4‑H Dairy Cattle Show offers 4‑H members an opportunity to compete an advanced level and meet 4‑H dairy cattle project members from other counties. This educational and competitive event promotes the 4‑H dairy cattle project and sportsmanship among the participants." Says Carol Ward, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Somerset County 4‑H Agent.

The 4‑H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station - Cooperative Extension. 4‑H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K–13 (one year out of high school), on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait, marital status, domestic partnership status, military service, veteran status and any other category protected by law.
