NJ State 4-H Beef Show

Throughout the year, youth enrolled in the 4-H Beef Program learn and develop the various skills necessary to properly raise, feed, condition, fit and show their project animals. Youth do not need to own a beef steer or heifer to participate in the program. Non-cattle owning members can take part in the loan-a-calf project by "borrowing" a project animal from another 4-H member or beef producer.

The result of the 4-H'ers efforts can be seen at the NJ State 4-H Beef Show. The show will take place in late August at the Horse Park of NJ. The club members will demonstrate their abilities in fitting and showmanship competitions, and exhibit in classes based on the animal's breed and age. As an added twist this year, 4-H'ers and their animals will team together to take part in the inaugural "Farm Yard Obstacle Course".

At the conclusion of the 'live-animal' portion of the show, members will try their hand in the educational skill-a-thon. The skill-a-thon is comprised of ten stations, each asking for the 4-H to answer a series of questions or demonstrate a particular skill. The stations will cover different topics from breed and parts identification to feed samples, grooming and cuts of meat identification. Participants will also judge a class of market steers and lambs.
